Despite long distance, more than 70 firms from Association of Southeast Nations (ASEAN) came to seek partners for cooperation at the second Northeast Asia Investment and Trade expo.

At the F Exhibition Hall of the Changchun International Exhibition Center, the booths of the ASEAN firms to exhibit native products, such as rosewood furniture, shell gift items and seafood, were surrounded by curious visitors.

"We found a new and promising market at the northeastern part of China. Our products were very popular here and the samples were almost sold out," said Benjamin Kalalo, managing director of the Philippine Exporters Confederation. Inc, who is also co-chairman of the Philippine trade group.

According to Benjamin Kalalo, 15 Philippine enterprises participated in the expo with 20 booths showing the traditional products like houseware, accessories, wood and shell gift items.

"It’s my second time to take part into the expo and many other companies in my country would like to do business at the vast northeast market, which offers new opportunities for us," he said.

Due to the geographical advantage, ASEAN enterprises have established a long and close economic relation with their counterparts in southern part of China and they have a stronger interest in participating in the China-ASEAN Expo held in Nanning, capital of the southern Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

"However, this expo has opened an other window for us to enter the China’s market," said Daw Htay Kywe, head of the trade group of Myanmar.

Enterprises from Myanmar occupied three exhibition booths at the Northeast trade expo. Many visitors showed strong interest with their furniture and jade accessories and some Chinese business people even asked for act as an agent for the companies, according to Daw Htay Kywe.

Besides expanding the business territory for their own products, the ASEAN firms also find some Chinese partners on new technology development through the expo.

We have another mission besides promoting Philippine products at the expo. That is to find some clean energy equipment developers in China as we know China has mature technology on solar and wind energy usage, which is what we need in Philippine, said Benjamin Kalalo.

The Philippine businessman said he had great interest with the solar products of the Shanghai-based Roy Solar Co., LTD. and the Shenzhen-based Topway Solar Co., LTD and he was ready to fly to the two cities to visit the companies to see if any opportunities for cooperation after the expo.

More than 40,000 officials and company representatives from 51 countries and regions have participated the five-day Northeast Asia Trade and Investment Expo, which opened Saturday in Changchun, provincial capital in northeastern Jilin Province. The event was co-sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce and Jilin Provincial Commercial Department. Enditem
